Sun simulation test

What is meant by sun simulation tests?

Sun simulation tests are used to test the ageing behaviour of plastics, complex components, coatings and paints. For this purpose, the materials and components are irradiated with artificial sunlight. The radiation from the sun causes products to become brittle, for example, and to fade over time. Sun simulation tests can be carried out in two ways: by a metal halide emitter or a xenon emitter.

Range of services of our solar simulation laboratory

For solar simulation, we have a variety of climatic chambers equipped with a solar module. Our climate chambers with a volume of up to 18 m³ can also be equipped with metal halide radiators. This allows us to irradiate an area of about 1.5 m² with up to 1200 W/m² and simulate worldwide use under the sun. In addition, by testing with metal halide emitters, we can recreate realistic climate superimposed day/night cycles.

To carry out a sun simulation test with a xenon emitter, we have facilities with a weathering module. This allows the components and materials to be exposed to rain and sunlight at the same time and ageing processes to be intensified by the burn-in effect.

So that we can test the use of your products in the installation position, our service includes the construction of a test piece receptacle as well as the production in our laboratory's own 3D printer.

In addition, we have measuring techniques to determine colour changes after a sun simulation test. For this purpose, colour spectra or a grey scale are used. In our in-house materials laboratory, we can also carry out further tests, e.g. hardness tests and macrosections.

What are the advantages of solar simulation testing?

Through sun simulation tests, we can check the durability of your product and detect possible colour or structural changes. In this way, materials used can be modified or replaced at an early stage and cases of damage in use can be avoided.

Use our sun simulation tests - and strengthen your customer loyalty and position in the market through product improvements!
